what if you didn't know who you were writing to?

Seabottles isn't a chat with strangers

And saying so up front saves everyone time.

A lot of people find Seabottles while looking for a way to “talk to strangers.” Sometimes it's what they were looking for. Often, it isn't. This page is here so you know before you go in.

What you won't find

What it is

It's a place to write what you feel to someone you don't know. You write a note between 15 and 800 characters long, choose one to three topics and how many days it floats, and let it go: the current offers it to random people around the world. All anyone sees of you is your city and country.

Whoever opens it can reply to you once. If you answer that reply, a private chat opens between the two of you. It's slow on purpose.

Why it's slow on purpose

Random chat works by skipping: you keep going until someone interesting shows up. That pushes everyone to grab attention fast, and what people say in the first thirty seconds is almost never what they really had to say.

Here it's the other way around. No one is going to skip you, because no one is choosing. Whoever opens your bottle opens it blind and reads all of it. And since there are no likes, no counters, and no way to be recognized, there's no reason to put on a show either.

The price is the wait. If what you want is to talk to someone right now, this isn't for you, and that's okay.

If you're going through a hard time and need to talk today

There are free, confidential helplines in your country, with someone trained on the other end. You'll find them in Need to talk? — you don't have to wait for an emergency.

One more thing: it's for adults

Seabottles is only for adults 18 and over. You write without a name and without the usual social filters, and that takes maturity. If you think a minor is using the app, tell us at hola@seabottles.org.

If you're still interested after all this, the full details are in How it works.
